Top 10 South Alabama Returners in 2020

The top 10 players returning to the South Alabama Jaguars for the 2020 college football season.

Important to note that this list is based upon last year's data and film from on each specific team as well as judgment based upon the player's position both his skill and the level of talent around him at the said position and influential cohorts. Positional value also plays a large factor in these rankings as does the offensive or defensive scheme.

1. Jalen Tolbert, WR

2. A.J. Deshazor, LB

3. Keith Gallmon, S

4. Tre Young, S

5. Riley Cole, LB

6. Nick Mobley, LB

7. Kawaan Baker, WR

8. Hadon Merchant, G

9. Kelvin Johnson, LB

10. Desmond Trotter, QB

Honorable Mention: Brian Ankerson, C; Jacob Shoemaker, T

Tolbert has a rare combination of size and speed, utilizing that all over the field but particularly well over the middle of the field. Arguably his best play of the season was negated by penalty elsewhere when he skied over a defender in the end zone against Arkansas State but that was forgotten and forgiven as he scored four touchdowns on just five receptions against the Red Wolves to close out the year. With some plus-play at quarterback, Tolbert could see even bigger numbers than his 27 receptions for 520 yards and six scores he saw last year.

Then there's the middle of the field players on the defense that are almost as outstanding. Deshazor flies around to the football and arguably does his best work in coverage by not limiting big plays whatsoever. Gallmon is rock solid coming down in run defense and a great player in coverage himself while Young similarly doesn't get beat for anything deep. Mobley and Cole round out the linebackers as this is a solid, experienced group that should only be getting better.

Baker also saw a big year at receiver all things considered. He's more of the shift slot type of receiver who has a surprisingly big frame for his moves. At 6'1, 210, he may be one of the bigger 'shifty' slot guys in the Group of 5.

Trotter will be the wild card as he's the most experienced within this group of quarterbacks on roster with the South Alabama offense. There are two JUCO transfers in Chance Lovertich and Tylan Morton but the way that Trotter played against Arkansas State to close the year gives reason for hope in 2020.
